The first thing to do in the trunk area is
to locate the Assist module/mounting location. My Assist module was
located in the back corner (driver's-side) of my trunk. It was easy to
locate just by looking at my trunk liner. The trunk liner had a
"raised square" which made it obvious that there was some hardware
device behind it. If your trunk liner does not have a "raised square",
than you will need to remove your trunk liner in order to find the
Assist module/mounting location. I would start in the back corner on the
driver's side.
-
To get started, remove the bottom trunk
liner panel that covers the spare tire. I did not need to use any tools
to get to the mounting location. As seen in picture 1 below I just
carefully peeled back the left-hand corner of the rear trunk liner to
expose the Assist module (#1).
-
The Assist module has three bolts that
need to be unscrewed in order to remove the module. You may also need to
peel back the left-hand side trunk liner to get at one of the bolts.
Once you've removed the three bolts disconnect the purple antenna
connector (#3) and the 54-pin wire harness from the Assist module. BE
CAREFUL, the 54-pin connector can not just be pulled out of the
assist module. It has a white lever that needs to be rotated 90 degrees
and then the connector can easily be disconnected. The 54-pin connector
(#2) with the white lever can be seen in picture 2 below.
-
Picture 2 illustrates the black mounting
bracket and the three speed nuts (#4). The speed nuts will need to be
moved from the Assist mounting position (diagonally mounted as seen in
picture 1) to the Bluetooth mounting position (horizontally mounted as
seen in picture 4). In picture 2 I have already moved the top two speed
nuts to the new Bluetooth mounting locations. The bottom speed nut
still needs to be pulled off and placed on the left-hand side of the
mounting bracket directly underneath the top speed nut. This may sound
complicated but it is common sense when you are actually looking at the
mounting bracket.
-
To make things easier, and to remove the
bottom speed nut, you may want to remove the black mounting bracket from
the back of the trunk. To do this unscrew the two bolts on the right (can
just be seen in picture 2) holding the mounting bracket in place.
Picture 3 was taken with the mounting bracket removed.
-
The purple antenna connector (#3) used for
the Assist module IS NOT the antenna that will be used for the
Bluetooth module (#6). As seen in picture 3 below, the antenna connector
for the Bluetooth module is a cream colored connector (#5).
-
Picture 3 shows an opening that is located
just left of the mounting area that supplies all the wires from the
cabin of the car to the trunk. The cream colored antenna connector (#5)
for the Bluetooth module was tucked inside this opening. I looked
at all the wires in the opening and by matter of elimination was able to
figure out which wire was the Bluetooth antenna. I could tell that the
wire I needed to pull out was most likely not already connected to
something else. I could also hear the cream colored plastic connection
hitting against something as I wiggled that wire. Obviously you want to
be careful here not to pull on a wire that is already in use and screw
something up. Take your time, it was fairly easy to get the cream
colored Bluetooth antenna connection out of the opening.
-
Once you've located the cream colored
Bluetooth antenna connection it's time to install the Bluetooth module
(#6). If you've removed the mounting bracket, reinstall it using the two
bolts. Connect the 54-pin connector (#2) to the Bluetooth module by
rotating the white lever 90 degrees and than back until the connection
is locked in place. Use the 3 bolts (that were holding the Assist module
on) to secure the Bluetooth module in place. Attach the cream colored
antenna connector to the right-side of the Bluetooth module. A
completely attached Bluetooth module can be seen in picture 4.
-
Once you're connections are made you are
done with the trunk area of the installation. Before putting the trunk
liner back in place I would continue with the pairing process of your
phone. Once you know everything is working correctly you can put the trunk
liner back in place.
